What Are Bed Bugs?

Just the thought of bed bugs makes our skin crawl. We’ve all heard the horror stories of hotel room visits only to find tiny, itchy bites or to see these bugs crawling on the sheets.

Bed bugs are small, reddish-brown insects that feed on the blood of humans and animals. They are notorious for their ability to hide in cracks, crevices, and furniture, making them challenging to detect and eradicate. We frequently think bed bugs directly point to uncleanliness – but that’s not always the case. Infestations of these tiny blood-sucking predators often lead to itchy bites, sleep disturbances, and anxiety.

How Do Bed Bugs Get In?

Bed bugs can enter a home, hotel or any facility through various means, often hitchhiking on items or people. We frequently hear of these bugs in places where we sleep, so it’s not unusual for them to be found in bedrooms, hotel rooms or even daycares. However, they can also invade other spaces. Here are some common ways bed bugs can infest a property:

  1. Traveling: Bed bugs are adept travelers and can hitch a ride on luggage, clothing, or other personal belongings. They may infest luggage or clothing during stays in infested hotels, motels, or other accommodations and then be unknowingly transported to a new location.
  2. Secondhand Furniture: Used furniture, especially mattresses, sofas, and chairs, can harbor bed bugs. Bringing infested furniture into a home or business setting without proper inspection can lead to an infestation.
  3. Visitors: Guests visiting from infested homes or hotels can inadvertently bring bed bugs with them. This is particularly common during holidays or gatherings when people stay overnight at one another’s homes or traveling in hotels.
  4. Shared Laundry Facilities: Yes – it can happen at the laundromat or on college campuses! Bed bugs can spread through shared laundry facilities when infested clothing or bedding comes into contact with other items.
  5. Public Transportation: Bed bugs can hide in public transportation, such as buses, trains, and taxis, and hitch a ride to a new location on unsuspecting passengers’ clothing or belongings.
  6. Neighboring Units: In multi-unit buildings like apartments or condominiums, bed bugs can migrate from one unit to another through cracks in walls, electrical outlets, or shared plumbing lines.
  7. Workplaces: Bed bugs can also be introduced into homes from workplaces, especially if employees share clothing storage areas or work in environments with high turnover and potential bed bug exposure.
  8. Schools and Daycares: Infestations can occur in educational facilities when bed bugs are brought in by students or staff, particularly if backpacks, jackets, or other personal items are stored in close proximity.

Overall, vigilance and preventive measures, such as regular inspection of luggage and secondhand furniture, can help reduce the risk of bed bug infestations in homes and hotels.

6 Keys to Success

  1. Wait to re-enter treated areas. This allows the bed and barrier application to dry without being disturbed. Once the product is dry (usually 2-3 hours), the bed may be remade with clean bedding.
  2. Regularly launder all bedding. It is important this is done prior to our visit for treatment, and the bedding be stored away from bed bugs. We recommend they be left in the dryer after drying if possible. Wash all sheets and pillowcases and dry at high heat for 30-40 minutes. Run comforters and pillows through dryer at high heat for 30-40 minutes. Laundering should continue regularly for the next few weeks.
  3. Maintain normal sleeping routines and locations. Otherwise, bed bugs will remain dormant in your absence and not coming into contact with the product applied.
  4. Expect wandering behavior. Prior to death, bed bugs emerge at odd times of the day and into plain view.
  5. DO NOT apply other chemical products after your pest control technician has left. Zone is using a biological product that grows mold spores on the bed bugs to cause death. Zone is using the travel habits of the bed bugs to share the product with other bed bugs to implode the population. Using other insecticides or chemicals along with your technician’s treatment will cause their application to NOT be effective.
  6. Be patient. You will see a significant reduction in the number of bed bugs in 4-7 days, but different life cycle stages may appear after that. Don’t be alarmed. The treatment will continue to work for up to 3 months. Research also shows that bed bugs lose interest in feeding after their first contact with the product used.

During your application, your technicians will install your new covers for your mattress and box springs. These covers must be purchased and delivered to you prior to Zone Pest Solutions scheduling your appointment date. Installing these covers is a critical part of the success of the treatment.

Amazon has a large selection of bedding covers and many can be obtained in as little as 24 hours. Thin plastic covers are typically cheaper and softer materials are more expensive. Make sure the listing states that the covers are approved for bed bug control. It is also important that the cover fit correctly. Please make sure that sizing is correct and the covers purchased represent your needs prior to purchasing.
