No One Likes Scorpions
Very few are fans of the scorpion. Scorpions are among the most intimidating pests homeowners encounter, and addressing their presence requires specialized knowledge and techniques. With Zone’s expertise in scorpion control, we ensure your home remains safe from these scary insects.
What are scorpions?
Scorpions are nocturnal arachnids known for their venomous sting, which can cause pain, swelling, and, in some cases, serious health issues. They often seek shelter in dark, secluded areas, making homes susceptible to infestations, particularly in warmer climates. Identifying their presence early is crucial to prevent potential harm to you and your family.
What Types of Scorpions are in Georgia?
While there are more than 20,000 species of scorpions in the world, in Georgia, there are only two that we see frequently. Those are:
- Southern Devil Scorpion: The most common type of scorpion in Georgia is the Southern Devil Scorpion. This scorpion is one of the few scorpions that are native to the southeastern United States and are not considered lethal. Typically they grow no more than 1 inch in length and a typical sting is like a bee sting. Some people may find that they are allergic to a scorpion sting, which can be medically dangerous, but for most, the Southern Devil Scorpion simply provides a painful sting that can become red, swollen and painful.
- Striped Bark Scorpion: The Striped Bark Scorpion is a bit scarier than the Southern Devil Scorpion. While these scorpions are frequently found in Southwestern states, they have been found as far north as Nebraska. While they are more frequent in sandy areas like those that can be found in south Georgia, we’ve seen active colonies in and around the metro Atlanta area. The Striped Bark Scorpion can grow to as large as 2.75 inches in length. Similar to the Southern Devil Scorpion, the sting of a Striped Bark Scorpion isn’t deadly unless you have an allergy, but it can be painful.
Other scorpions that have been seen in Georgia include the Southern Unstriped Scorpion which does NOT have the whiplike tail of a typical scorpion and the tiny Pseudoscorpion. More information regarding Scorpions in Georgia can be found in our recent blog post.
